FAQs
- How are preserved flowers made?
Unlike dried flowers, preserved flowers undergo a much more technical process. After the fresh flowers are cut they are then placed, stem first, into glycerine (trihydric alcohol) to undergo a rehydration process. Glycerine (also called glycerol or glycerin) is a simple polyol compound. It is a colourless, odourless, viscous liquid that is sweet-tasting and non-toxic. The glycerine is absorbed by the flower, through the stem, until it substitutes the sap. After this process is complete, the plant is ready to be used. The final product remains soft and almost exactly like they were in nature.
2. How do you care for dried flowers and preserved flowers?
They both have similar care instructions that include the following:
• DO NOT WATER or spray perfume on flowers as this can cause damage.
• Display them indoors and away from direct sunlight.
• Keep them away from ventilation grilles.
• Avoid touching or fluffing them repeatedly as this may cause the flowers to break or shorten their shelf-life.
• Always keep preserved flowers in a dry place with a humidity level of less than 50.
• Keep preserved flowers in the carton when the storage environment gets humid, and then let the flowers dry out ASAP to avoid mould growth.
- How long do preserved and dried flowers last?
When properly cared for, preserved and dried flowers can last for several months to years. Avoid exposure to direct sunlight, humidity, and excessive moisture to prolong their beauty.
- What is meant by the term “bleached flowers”?
Bleaching is a procedure exclusively applicable to flowers post-preservation or drying. After preservation or drying, one can opt to alter their original color through the bleaching process. To achieve a change in flower color, bleaching is necessary to eliminate the original pigment entirely. Following the bleaching process, subtle food dyes can be introduced to create various hues.
- Why do preserved flowers have an odor? And how can the unpleasant smell be minimized?
It is inevitable to experience some odor after the chemical treatment or bleaching of preserved flowers, especially when they are freshly unpacked from large cartons. It is advisable to place them in a well-ventilated area for some time to diminish the unpleasant smell. However, caution should be exercised to prevent exposure to direct sunlight.
- why some of the flower stems are soft?
Certain light-colored preserved flowers, like white ones, undergo the bleaching and soaking process. As a result, their flower stems become softer and more delicate compared to others. Occasionally, they may also feel more moist than other flowers. Placing them in a ventilated area helps reduce moisture. While we make every effort to minimize stem breakage, occasional breakage may occur, and if so, it is recommended to use a BBQ stick or toothpicks to stabilize the stems.
- Why do the colors of eternal flowers vary?
Unlike artificial flowers, everlasting flowers are natural plants that undergo chemical dyeing. Various factors such as temperature, humidity, light, and storage duration impact their color appearance. The shape and color of each flower bunch cannot be precisely identical. Over time, they may experience fading, particularly when exposed to bright light, after being stored for an extended period.
- What if my preserved flowers are not white enough?
White preserved flowers undergo a bleaching process, making them more humid than flowers of other colors. This humidity can impact their whiteness if they are not adequately dried in time. It is advisable to place them in a sunny location for drying. However, caution should be taken not to expose them to direct sunlight, as this may result make it too dry. This method is particularly effective for flowers like Ming fern, misty, and hydrangeas.
- Why is the pampas grass I received not fluffy enough?
Pampas grass is typically stored in large quantities in boxes, which may cause compression. Upon receiving them, gently shake or use a hairdryer to blow on them, and they will regain their fluffiness. Placing them in full sunlight can also enhance their fluffiness. Please note that these operations are recommended to be carried out outdoors to prevent lint from spreading everywhere.
