FAQ
1. How are preserved flowers made?
Preserved flowers undergo a specialised process that maintains their natural beauty and softness for a long time. After being freshly cut, the flowers are placed stem-first into glycerine (also known as glycerol or glycerine), a colourless, odourless, and non-toxic liquid. The glycerine is gradually absorbed through the stem, replacing the flower's natural sap. This process ensures that the final product remains supple and retains the similar fresh appearance of a living fresh flower.
2. How do I care for dried and preserved flowers?
Dried and preserved flowers have similar care instructions:
• DO NOT water them or spray perfume, as this may cause damage.
• Avoid direct contact with water, including accidental spills or placing them in damp environments.
• Keep them indoors, away from direct sunlight.
• Avoid placing them near near air vents, air-conditioner outlets, or areas with strong airflow.
• Minimise handling, as frequent touching may cause breakage or shorten their lifespan.
• Store preserved flowers in a dry environment with a humidity level below 50%.
• Keep them away from moisture-prone areas such as bathrooms, kitchens, or near open windows where rain or condensation may reach them.
• If the storage environment becomes too humid, place preserved flowers in a carton with silica gel or moisture-absorbing packets and allow them to dry in a well-ventilated area as soon as possible to prevent mould growth.
3. How long do preserved and dried flowers last?
To maximise their longevity, keep them in cool, dry places, away from direct sunlight, moisture, and strong airflow (such as from air-conditioners and fans). If humidity levels rise, placing them in a carton with silica gel or a dehumidifier can help maintain their condition.
4. What are bleached flowers?
Bleaching is a procedure exclusively applicable to flowers post-preservation or drying. After preservation or drying, one can opt to alter their original color through the bleaching process. This method removes their original pigment, creating a pale or white appearance. Following bleaching, the flowers can be dyed with subtle food colouring to achieve different hues.
5. Why do preserved flowers have an odour? How can I reduce it?
It is normal for preserved flowers to have a slight odour due to the chemical treatment or bleaching process, particularly when they are freshly unpacked from large cartons. To reduce the smell, place the flowers in a well-ventilated area for some time. However, avoid direct sunlight to prevent damage.
6. Why are some flower stems soft?
Certain light-coloured preserved flowers, such as white varieties, undergo a bleaching and soaking process that makes their stems softer and more delicate. In some cases, they may feel slightly moist. Placing them in a ventilated area will help reduce excess moisture. While we take precautions to minimise stem breakage, occasional breakage may occur. If needed, you can stabilise the stems using a BBQ stick or toothpick.
7. Why do the colours of preserved flowers vary?
Unlike artificial flowers, preserved flowers are natural plants that undergo chemical dyeing. Their colour appearance may be influenced by temperature, humidity, light exposure, and storage duration. Each flower bunch is unique, and slight variations in shape and colour are normal. Over time, fading may occur, especially if exposed to bright light for extended periods.
8. What if my preserved flowers are not white enough?
White preserved flowers undergo a bleaching process that makes them more humid than other colours. If not adequately dried, this humidity may affect their whiteness. To enhance their brightness, place them in a well-ventilated area with indirect sunlight. However, avoid direct exposure to sunlight, as this may cause the flowers to dry out excessively. This method is particularly effective for flowers such as Ming fern, misty, and hydrangeas.
9. Why is the pampas grass I received not fluffy enough?
Pampas grass is often stored in large quantities, which can cause compression. To restore its fluffiness:
• Gently shake the stems or use a hairdryer on a low, cool setting.
• Expose them to full sunlight for a short period.
• Perform these steps outdoors to prevent lint from spreading indoors.
